BJP Breaks Through in West Bengal as 2026 India Elections Reshape Regional Power Across States
The 2026 election results mark a major shift in India’s regional politics, highlighted by a strong BJP breakthrough in West Bengal where it ended Mamata Banerjee’s 15-year rule by winning a clear majority with about 205–207 seats in the 294-seat assembly and a vote share above 44 percent. The Trinamool Congress was reduced to around 80–87 seats, with key losses even in its strong areas.
In Tamil Nadu, actor-politician Vijay’s TVK emerged as a major new force, winning around 105–110 seats and disrupting the long-standing Dravidian political structure, while Chief Minister MK Stalin suffered a major setback. In Kerala, the Congress-led UDF returned to power with about 102 seats, pushing the Left out of government. In contrast, Assam saw the BJP-led alliance strengthen its position with a record win of 102 out of 126 seats.
Overall, the results show a significant reshaping of regional power, with BJP expanding influence in eastern India, traditional parties losing ground in parts of the south, and new political movements gaining momentum.
